Sumo Didi, the movie inspired by India”s first female sumo wrestler Hetal Dave, will have its world premiere at 36th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF). The film has been officially selected in the competitive Asian Future section of the festival, and it will be screened on October 27. Sumo Didi is  helmed by Jayant Rohatgi and it is his debut directorial.

The biopic features Shriyam Bhagnani in lead role, and Nitesh Pandey, Chaitanya Sharma, and Raghav Dhir in pivotal roles.

The movie is presented by Jio Studios, and co-presented by The Japan Foundation.

Jio Studios, on the social media platform X, posted: “Tokyo Welcomes Sumo Didi!” Announcing its world premiere at the festival, they added that it is a “tale of empowerment & resilience.”

“Hetal, a talented wrestler, discovers sumo by chance, but her road to improvement is very steep. Unwilling to give up her dream, she goes to Japan and endures rigorous training. A unique Indian sumo girl movie!,” TIFF wrote about the plotline of the movie in their website.

The movie is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Akash Chawla, Arunava Joy Sengupta, and Amit Chandrra. Mr Chawla and Mr Sengupta are also credited for the story, while  screenplay and dialogue for Sumo Didi is written by Nikhil Sachan.

The movie is a Freshlime Films and Math Entertainment Network Pvt Ltd production.
