At least 12 individuals have been hospitalized over the past two days due to suspected food poisoning after consuming a non-vegetarian street food item in Mumbai. The incident has been reported from the Goregaon area, as per a civic official’s statement on Sunday.

According to the official, nine out of the 12 affected individuals have been discharged from the hospital, while the remaining three are still undergoing treatment, news agency Press Trust of India quoted the official as saying.

The incident took place at Satellite Tower in the Santosh Nagar area of Goregaon (East) on Friday, following the consumption of chicken shawarma, the official disclosed.

“On Friday and Saturday, twelve people reported symptoms of food poisoning and were subsequently admitted to the hospital. While nine have been discharged, three continue to receive medical care,” stated the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official, refraining from specifying whether the affected individuals consumed the food at a hotel or a shop.

Shawarma, a Middle Eastern dish prepared by layering seasoned meat—typically lamb, chicken, turkey, beef, or a blend of these—onto a vertical rotisserie, where it is slowly roasted until tender and aromatic. Once cooked, thin slices of the outer layer of meat are shaved off using a large knife or special blade and served in various styles.
