Hyderabad, India: What happens when the much-loved dumpling dish, momo, turns deadly? A 33-year-old woman who died and at least 20 others who suffered from food poisoning after consuming the dish from a street vendor in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills region.
The woman, Resham Begum, and her two daughters, aged 12 and 14, ate momo from a street vendor in Khairatabad on Friday. Shortly after, they suffered from diarrhoea, stomach pain, and vomiting. While Resham Begum, a single mother, died on Sunday morning, her daughters are currently under treatment.

Two people running the shop have been detained.
An investigation has been launched into the matter, and a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been filed.
Based on the initial investigation, the police found the extremely unhygienic conditions under which the street vendor prepared the food. Operating without any food safety license, the vendor stored the momo dough in the refrigerator without any proper packing. The probe also found that the refrigerator door was broken.
Samples from the street vendor have been sent for a detailed lab analysis.
After a complaint was filed by the woman’s family, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s food safety department and police traced the street vendor.

Sub-inspector of Banjara Hills Police Station, Ram Babu, told news agency PTI, “We received a complaint yesterday that Reshma Begum (33) died and 15 others suffered food poisoning after consuming memos (street food) from a single vendor at different locations. We have registered a case and are investigating the matter.”
