India Registers 752 New Covid Cases, 4 Deaths In The Past 24 Hours

The spread of the coronavirus new sub-variant JN.1 has generated increased concerns in the country, with new affected areas, rising cases and casualties. According to the latest information about the Covid, India recorded 752 new Covid cases, and 4 deaths in the past 24 hours. The central government has directed all the states to send samples of COVID-19 test swabs for whole genome sequencing in a drive to examine for any concerning variant of the virus. The affected states in India, which have also shown a rise in the cases are Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Goa, Puducherry, Gujarat, Telangana, Punjab, and Delhi. The new sub-variant was first reported in Kerala.

As directed by the central government, the states have stepped up the vigilance, making preparations and implementing surveillance regulations. However, most of the infected cases, around 93 % are mild and do not have serious symptoms hence requiring home quarantine only. Among the infected who are undergoing treatment across the hospitals, 0.1 % are on ventilator support, giving relief that no patients getting serious or developing casualties. 1.2 % of the patients are admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), while 0.6 % are living with oxygen support, according to the data from the government.

World Health Organization (WHO) says that there is no evidence that the JN.1 variant poses a greater risk to public health compared to other variants that are already there and it further added that the vaccines that are available now are enough to prevent serious health conditions and death to Covid. WHO has also classified the JN.1 as ‘a variant of interest’ noting that it has a rapid spreading rate across the world and that it can be problematic to those aged and people with comorbidities.

However, states have taken steps to confront any rise in the cases by arranging proper facilities and space in the hospitals and implementing preventive measures.
