Causing fear about another COVID wave among the people, the new coronavirus subvariant JN.1 has reported more cases across the country, and according to NITI Aayog member VK Paul, it records a total of 21 cases. Paul, however, said that there is no cause for alarm now. He added that experts are closely monitoring the new variant and asked the states to enhance testing and surveillance.
Besides, he sought seamless coordination between the Centre and the states to manage the situation effectively. “Let us undertake mock drills once every three months at both the central and state levels and share best practices,” the health minister Mansukh Mandaviya demanded.
As per the latest reports, Goa reported 19 cases of the new JN.1 variant, while Maharashtra and Kerala reported one case for each. In the past two weeks, 16 COVID- deaths have been reported among people with serious morbidities.
Union Health Minister reviewed the current situation, including the preparedness for the public health systems in the backdrop of a growing number of COVID-19 cases. “It is important to be on alert and be prepared against new and emerging strains of the coronavirus,” Mandaviya said.
Indicating that the complications are less as the hospitalisation rate due to the Covid is lower, Mandaviya said that no increase in hospitalisation rates has been witnessed. “The cases that have been hospitalised were due to other medical conditions and Covid was an incidental finding,” he added.
Following the fresh COVID concern among the people, experts assured that the new variant has mild symptoms, highlighting the disease’s mild nature and assuaged the public from turning panic.
