Covid 19 has once again hit the headlines with reports of the disease spreading across Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Thailand. At least 30 people have been died over the past four weeks in Hong Kong, raising concerns regarding the fresh outbreak of the virus that threatened the entire world.

Health officials have reported a sharp rise in the cases with the proportion of respiratory samples testing positive increased to 13.7 percent from 6.2 percent four weeks prior in early April, according to a report by The South China Morning Post. The authorities in Hong Kong have warned the city has entered a new wave.

As per the report, authorities found that 83 percent of the severe cases involved patients aged 65 or older, mostly having pre-existing health conditions.

To the relief of people, there is currently no indication that the new variants circulating locally are more transmissible or cause more severe disease compared to previously circulating variants. However, the disease is spreading with considerable seriousness as daily hospitalisations surged by around 30 percent.

The Singapore health ministry has issued its first CUD-related update, noting that the resurgence in cases is likely due to waning immunity rather than more severe or transmissible variants.

Earlier, there were reports that compared to the pre-Covid statistics, fatalities from infectious diseases have doubled since the pandemic outbreak. It is reported that the death toll has gradually risen across the 20 or so categories of communicable diseases, while a considerable jump was reported in leptospirosis-related fatalities. Leptospirosis alone caused nearly one-third of all deaths from infectious diseases, while the fatality rate from hepatitis also saw an uptick, The New Indian Express reported citing health officials.

During the past few months, several cities in the region have reported significant hikes in child cases, with waves of the now-endemic disease swelling periodically. Health officials have also urged people to get booster shots and vaccinations and follow other covert guidelines.
