One of the premier cancer research and treatment facility in India, Tata Institute of Mumbai has claimed to have discovered a treatment that can prevent the reappearance of cancer the second time.

The researchers and doctors at the institute claimed that they have developed a tablet that would prevent the coming back of cancer for the second time in patients and also that would decrease the aftereffects of treatments like radiation and chemotherapy by 50 percent.

Dr Rajendra Badve, a senior cancer surgeon at Tata Memorial Hospital, and member of research group told NDTV that human cancer cells were inserted in rats for the research which in turn developed tumour in the rats. Following, the rats were treated with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery. It was discovered that these cancer cells break into tiny pieces called Chromatin particles when they die. Through the bloodstream, these particles can travel to other parts of the body and when they enter healthy cells, they can turn into cancer.

In the research, Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) observed that dying cancer cells which release cell-free chromatin particles (cfChPs, or fragments of chromosomes) can change healtrhy cells into cancerous ones. Some of the cfChPs may fuse with healthy chromosomes and turn into new tumours, the research adds.

“To find a solution to this problem, doctors gave pro-oxidant tablets with resveratrol and copper (R+Cu) to the rats,” Dr Rajendra Badve told NDTV. The R+Cu creates Oxygen radicals, which in turn destroys Chromatin Particles.
When “R+Cu” consumed orally, it generates Oxygen radicals in the stomach that are quickly absorbed and enter blood circulation. The oxygen radicals destroy cfChPs released in circulation and stop “Metastases”, which is the movement of cancer cells from one part of the body to another. The researchers stated that R+Cu prevents toxicity resulting from Chemotherapy, and they termed it as “Magic of R+Cu” in their presentation.

According to researchers, this tablet will diminish the side effects of cancer treatment therapy by about 50 percent and the second time it is about 30 percent effective in preventing cancer. It can be also effective on the pancreas, lungs and oral cancer.

“Tata doctors were working on this tablet for almost a decade. The tablet is awaiting approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). TIFR scientists have applied to FSSAI to approve this tablet. After getting the approval, it will be available in the market from June-July. This tablet will help to a great extent in improving cancer treatment,” NDTV reports as the senior cancer surgeon is saying.

As the budget for the treatment spans from lakhs to crores, this tablet will be available for just Rs. 100, senior surgeon added. It will take about five years to complete the human trials, Doctor said.
