24 patients including 12 infants died in 24 hours at Shankarao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded, Maharashtra.

Officials explained as shortage in medicine and hospital staff caused tragedy.

Twenty four patients including twelve newborns died at a Maharashtra government hospital in last 24 hours, due to the shortage of medicine and hospital staff. Opposition leaders hit out at the Eknath Shinde ruled BJP state government to break the silence and answer for the deaths.

The tragic event was reported from Shankarao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded, Maharashtra, said the news agency PTI. A three member committee has been set up to lead the investigation on the incident, PTI added retelling an official.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde condemned the tragedy as “unfortunate” and told media that strict action will be taken after appealing more information from the concerned officials, says NDTV.

The Opposition leaders launched an extensive attack on the Shinde government from all around and accused the “triple-engine sarkar” (the government formed in coalition of the BJP, the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar faction of NCP) to shoulder the whole responsibility, as said by the NCP (The Nationalist Congress Party) chief and senior leader Sharad Pawar.

Mr Pawar, tracing an earlier similar tragedy in which 18 people died in a single night at the Kalwa Hospital of Thane Municipal Corporation in Maharashtra, charged the state government for administration negligence and indicated a “failure of government systems”.

Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena (UBT) criticised the government loudly as the incident is not mere deaths but “murder” caused by “absolute negligence on the part of the unconstitutional state government”.

Congress leader and MP Jairam Ramesh took his X handle on Monday and blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the PM is chasing “self-glory” and “headlines” while most of the government functioned hospitals, which were launched in tremendous publicity and media attention are now suffering to meet adequate faculty and facilities. He also shared an earlier news report in which the National Medical Commission reveals that, all the medical colleges in the country “failed to meet the 50% attendance requirement”.

Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi felt “extremely sad” for the situation in which 24 people, including 12 newborns died of medicine shortages. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and blamed the BJP government as they are spending “thousands of crores of rupees on its publicity” while neglecting the financial need for purchasing medicines for children. “In the eyes of BJP, the lives of the poor have no value”, he added.

Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi demanded strict action against the responsible people behind the incident and compensation to the affected families.
