8 UDP MLAs Switch To BJP, Party Strength Rises From 2 To 10 In Meghalaya
At least eight UDP MLAs in Meghalaya have joined the BJP on Wednesday at party headquarters in New Delhi, leaving the United Democratic Party. With this, the BJP has increased its seats in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly from two to 10.
The switch happened amid the BJP’s welcome and followed the MLAs’ push for assurances on coal mining resumption and Khasi language inclusion. The eight sitting legislators who switched to the saffron party include Lahkmen Rymbui, Pius Marwein, Kyrmen Shylla, Mayralborn Syiem, Matthew Kurbah, Ollan Singh Suin, Balajied Kupar Synrem, and Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah.

The legislators were inducted into the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, BJP national spokesperson and Northeast in-charge Sambit Patra and other senior party leaders. Reacting to the development, Minister Rijju said that the legislators were impressed by the BJP’s leadership and transformation of the Northeast under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led NDA government.
