In a painful incident in Meghalaya’s Ri-Choi district on Saturday, a pregnant woman admitted to Nongpoh Civil Hospital delivered a baby while in the toilet. The baby did not survive and died minutes after the delivery.
The woman, Monalisa Langi, a resident of Umden Diwon, had initially been taken to the Umden Primary Health Centre (PHC) after experiencing labor pain. She was later referred to Nongpoh Civil Hospital late on the night of September 20.

Monalisa was admitted to Nongpoh Civil Hospital at around 4 AM on September 21. By the evening, the woman complained of severe pain. Though she was given pain relief pills, the pain did not go away. Though Monalisa had entered the labor room around 6 p.m., the delivery happened while the woman was in the toilet after she experienced immense discomfort.
The incident caused outrage, and the members of the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) visited the hospital, seeking clarification from the authorities on the incident. The NGO also accused the hospital administration of being negligent toward its patient.
The heath department has not yet responded to the incident yet.

In July this year, a 17-year-old student from a private pre-university college in Karnataka’s Kolar district gave birth to a baby on the campus women’s toilet. The investigation later revealed that the girl and a boy had been in a relationship for the past two years, and the girl was concealing her pregnancy from the parents at home.
