Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the UP government will soon introduce family ID cards in the state. Under this scheme, which was announced during the debate on the governor’s address in the Uttar Pradesh assembly, each family will have its own card.

This initiative aims to extend welfare scheme benefits of the central and state governments to underserved families. It mainly focuses on seven schemes. Families without ration cards and are not included in the National Food Security will have to apply for a Family ID. While those families who possess ration cards will have their cards which will serve as their Family ID.

The 12-digit unique identifier will contain comprehensive family information. It will further act as a central repository of family attributes and will facilitate the automatic determination of their eligibility for government schemes and the extension of benefits to those who have been overlooked. Various departments, including education, social welfare, and labor will utilize the database to administer Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) programs.

Using the scheme, the household lacking employment can be tracked and given priority to provide them with potential job opportunities.

Yogi in the state assembly said that the work of this scheme is under progress and details of 6 crore 64 lakh families are already taken. He announced that under the scheme one member of the family will be guaranteed employment.

Adityanath in his speech highlighted that the government has provided free ration to 80 crore people during the Covid-19 pandemic. Other welfare schemes provided by the UP government also included 40 lakh houses for the poor, electricity connection to 2.5 crore households, construction of 599 new expressways and highways, setting up of 25 new medical colleges, and increase in the number of police stations from 1500 to 3000.
