AIADMK on Monday announced their decision to end alliance with BJP-led NDA, and also broke its ties with BJP. After months of speculation over their strained relationship, AIADMK took this decision due to Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai”s repeated comments on AIADMK leaders.

Months away from 2024 General Elections, a meeting at the party ‘s head office in Chennai, attended by district heads, MLAs and MPs, and chaired by party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, unanimously passed a resolution on this matter.

“AIADMK is breaking all ties with BJP and NDA alliance from today. The state leadership of the BJP has been continuously making unnecessary remarks about our former leaders, our general secretary EPS and our cadres for the past one year,” KP Munusamy, AIADMK Deputy Coordinator and former minister said announcing the decision.

The party cadre welcomed Mr. Munusamy’s announcement through bursting fireworks and shouting slogans.

The party will head a separate alliance and will face the general election, Deputy Coordinator added.

BJP Chief’s comment on late AIADMK leader, and former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s tenure, 1991-96 being the most corrupt rule in Tamil Nadu’s history has triggered controversy before. Recently, on September 11, in an allegation against Dravidian leader and former Chief Minister CN Annadurai that the late leader insulted Hinduism during an event in Madurai in 1956 has also furthered tiff between AIADMK and BJP.

Referring to BJP leader’s remark on Jayalalithaa, Senior AIADMK leader D Jayakumar said last week, “Annamalai is unfit to be the BJP”s state president… He speaks ill of late leaders only to project himself,”  NDTV reports.

Meanwhile, State BJP Chief, K Annamalai refused to comment on AIADMK’s decision and he, who was in Coimbatore for his Padayatra said, “I don’t want to speak politics during the yatra,” reports TOI.

The AIADMK and BJP has formed partnership several times over the course of history, and recently it was in 2019 and had only one Lok Sabha seat.
