OpIndia’s Editor-in-chief Nupur J Sharma’s post on Sufis and her remark on Indian mystic Mu’in al Din-Chishti has become trending on twitter with hashtag #ArrestNupurSharma. In her controversial post, she regarded Sufism to be associated to several genocides against Hindus rather than being considered to be peaceful, spiritual sect of Islam.

She wrote, “Historically, several genocides against Hindus and crimes against their faith/places of worship have been led by Sufis or have been conducted at the behest of Sufis.”

“It is a matter of historical record that eighteenth-century Sufi preacher Shah Waliullah’s letters to Islamic rulers and nobles show that he was very keen on rejuvenating Islamic supremacy in Delhi, which had started to loosen its grip over the sub-continent after Aurangzeb’s death,” she added.

She alleged that as per the records from Sayidi Athar Abbas Rizvi, Shah Walliullah wrote a letter to an Afghanistan invader inviting him to India to establish a Islamic supremacy by suppressing Hindus. Mr Sharma claimed in her post that Sufism has a “chequered history” which consists of genocide, enslavement, forced conversation and establishment of the supremacy of Islam.

“Now, coming to the specific comments in question about Moinuddin Chisti – one made during an interview with the Son of Hamas – Mosab Hassan Yousef,” she wrote. Moinuddin Christi is regarded as the foremost preacher of Sufism among Sufis of India and he is a follower of Chistya sect.

Her post further added instances alleging Sufism’s association with violence against Hindus. She also added few documentations along with the post.

“I, however, stand by the rest of my statement and if needed, I will be more than willing to defend my position in a court of law,” she concluded.
