
At Least 15 Die As Heavy Rain, Landslides Hit West Bengal's Darjeeling
Kolkata, West Bengal: Heavy rains triggered landslides and flooding in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district on Sunday, October 5. At least 15 people have lost their lives and the Dudhia Iron Bridge over the Balason River collapsed in the catastrophic incident. Rescue operations by police and the National Disaster Response Force are underway.
The landslides have severed roads, isolating hill communities in areas like Mirik, Kalimpong, and Kurseong, stranding hundreds of people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed pain over the incident while offering condolences to the deceased and their families. In a social media post, the Prime Minister wrote, “Deeply pained by the loss of lives due to a bridge mishap in Darjeeling. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”

The Prime Minister further said that the situation in Darjeeling and surrounding areas is being closely monitored in the wake of heavy rains and landslides, adding that the government is committed to providing all possible assistance to those affected.
