Congress To Challenge Waqf (Amendment) Bill In Supreme Court

New Delhi: After the Parliament passed the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on Friday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announced on Friday that the party would petition the Supreme Court to challenge the constitutionality of the Bill.

After the Lok Sabha approved the Bill following a 12-hour debate on Thursday, the Rajya Sabha also passed the Bill on Friday morning.

“The INC’s challenge of the CAA, 2019, is being heard in the Supreme Court. The INC’s challenge of the 2019 amendments to the RTI Act, 2005, is being heard in the Supreme Court. The INC’s challenge to the validity of the amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules (2024) is being heard in the Supreme Court,” the party’s General Secretary in charge of Communications and Rajya Sabha member said in a post on X on Friday.

During the Parliament debate, opposition leaders said that the Waqf Amendment Bill violated Constitutional principles and affirmed their faith in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, calling it a “watershed moment,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Parliament in the country’s collective quest for “socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive growth.”

“We will now enter an era where the framework will be more modern and sensitive to social justice. On a larger note, we remain committed to prioritising the dignity of every citizen. This is also how we build a stronger, more inclusive and more compassionate India,” he added.
