
DMK To Challenge Waqf Bill In Supreme Court; Stalin Wears Black Badge In Protest (image:screen grab from x.com/mkstalin)
Chennai, Tamil Nadu: As a mark of protest against the passage of the Waqf Bill in the Lok Sabha, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M. K. Stalin along with DMK MLAs, wore black badges during the assembly session on Thursday. He said his party would file a case in the Supreme Court against the Bill.
Stalin attacked the bill, stating that despite the widespread opposition, it was pushed through at 2am with the support of alliance. He called it as “attack on the Constitution” and an “act of sabotaging religious harmony”.
“Our stand is that this bill should not merely be opposed but completely withdrawn,” the New Indian Express quotes, citing Chief Minister.

Earlier, Stalin had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the Centre to withdraw the Bill emphasising thar the bill may disturb religious harmony in the country and affect the Muslim community. He stated that the amendments would weaken the powers of Waqf Boards as well as the existing protections for waqf properties.

The reworked Waqf (Amendment) Bill, also called the ‘Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development (UMEED) re-introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. After 12-hour-long intense debate, the Waqf Bill passed in Lok Sabha late midnight.
The bill tabled in the Rajya Sabha today for discussion. In the lower house, 288 members voted in favour of the Amendment bill and 232 voting against it.
