Delhi Court Stays Police Action Against JNU Professor Bimol Akoijam
A Delhi court on Thursday ordered Delhi Police not to take any coercive action against Congress Member of Parliament (MP) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor A Bimol Akoijam in connection with the sexual harassment case against him.
Several students have raised sexual harassment allegations against Akoijam. Following which, the police registered an FIR for offences of sexual harassment under Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the professor.
Halting the arrest, the court said that seven days’ notice must be given to Akoijam if his arrest is required. Special Judge Digvinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue Courts passed the order, noting that Akoijam has clear antecedents and that he has been cooperating in the investigation.
The court said that the probe is ongoing and victims’ statements have yet to be recorded because the JNU administration has not provided their names and details.
