People gathered in the streets of Surat following a rumour that a man accidently dropped a packet of diamonds worth millions of rupees on the street. And the rumour spread like wildfire in the city. And the incident took place in the city of Surat, which is known for its large market for diamond polishing, cutting and crafting.
As soon as the news spread, the locals started gathering on the roads from Mini Bazaar to Khodiyar town in Varachha area. Some even collected dust from the market in search of diamonds. While others managed to find few diamonds however, they turned out to be American diamonds, synthesised replacement for diamonds. Few dedicated ones cleaned the area with brooms, hoping to find diamonds in the dust, reports Ahmedabad mirror.
Arvind Panseria, who searching the street for diamonds, said a man found a diamond. But it was an American diamond used in imitation jewellery or saree work. “It seems somebody played a prank,” he added, according to Wion news.
The place where the incident took place is the hub for diamond trade. Soon after the incident took place, the video started circulating on the internet and the rumour started to circulate there as well. And some spread the video in the name of “diamond market turmoil”.
“Amid all the hype and claims of economic revolution in the country in last 9 years, a Surat based diamond trader was forced to throw away his diamonds on the streets after getting frustrated over failure to create demand for his business in the current challenging business environment. Scores of people are seen collecting the throw diamond from the streets. We can now imagine the dire state of the diamond industry in Surat which has been hit by dwindling exports,” falling prey to the rumour, Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani wrote on X.

Another post on X (formerly Twitter) reads, “Troubled by the terrible recession in Surat, diamond traders threw diamonds on the road, this is also beyond imagination but it is possible only because Modi is there.”
As per the report, the recession in the Surat diamond industry is due to Russia-Ukraine war. And there has been a large decline of overall gross exports of gems and jewellery compared to last year. Data from the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council”s (GJEPC) showed that the overall gross exports of gems & jewellery for the April-June quarter stood at ₹60,222.10 crore as compared to ₹77,499.44 crore in the corresponding period in 2022, marking a 28.08 per cent decline
