Muslim Student Stopped From Writing Exam For Growing Beard In Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Gujarat: As reports of atrocities against minorities in India become usual, a recent viral video shared by Congress leader shehzadk Pathan showed an Islamophobic incident from a college authority to a Muslim student. The incident occurred at LG Hospital Nursing College of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and a Muslim nursing student, named Abu Bakar, was allegedly stopped from writing an exam at LG Hospital Nursing College for growing a beard.

The video shared by X user Hate Detector showed that the student was stopped from entering the examination hall and asked to shave before sitting for the exam. The video shows shehzadk questioning the staff’s logic for asking the student about his beard, especially during an exam.

The politician is seen reprimanding the teachers, asking them how they can ask to remove the beard to a student when there are no such rules for examination. “There are no such rules or systems that say to remove a beard for sitting for an examination,” he asks.

Talking about the incident, Pathan, who is the National secretory of Indian Youth Congress, later said that he was informed about the discriminatory development by a phone call. Pathan, also the leader of opposition in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, further noted that the biggest question of the time is that the country’s disciplinary level has declined to such a level that even students have to face it.  “This is a great shame. I think Gujarat is India’s biggest brand industry of RSS thoughts, which has reached even colleges,” he was heard saying in a video.

The Congress leader further stated that Gujarat University should not be given centers for any kind of exams if this type of attitude has been there in the university

Netizens have reacted sharply to the behaviors’ of the teacher towards the student and called for the immediate removal of the staff involved in the ordeal. Many pointed out that troubling a student during an exam in the name of religions is a shame, especially when the country expresses a grudge over atrocities faced by minorities in the neighboring countries.

 

Last year,  a Muslim student had moved the Supreme Court seeking quashing of a school regulation preventing him from sporting a beard, arguing that every citizen should be allowed to follow his religious beliefs.
