Guwahati, Assam: The Assam BJP government recently decided to give over 3,000 bigha—nearly 81 million square feet – of its land to a private company to start a mining and cement factory unit. A video now going round on social media shows Guwahati High Court judge Sanjay Kumar Medhi expressing his shock over the huge land handover move by the government to a private company, purportedly Mahabal Group.

While a lawyer pointed out it was for mining, the judge shockingly asked, “3,000 bigha? What kind of decision is this? Is this some kind of joke or what?” When the lawyer argued it was needed for the entity, the judge was heard stating, “Your need is not the issue, public interest is the issue?”

Notably, while many X handlers claimed the Himanta Biswa Sarma-government handed over the huge land swath to the Adani group for the cement factory, several pointed out Mahabal Cement is a separate entity with no ties to Adani’s cement operations. But a report by India Herald suggested that the company that the Assam government handed over the land is associated with the Adani group.

An X user Dilip Ray highlighted that Adani Group acquired Holcim’s stake in ACC and Ambuja Cements for US$10.5 billion in May 2022, making it India’s second-largest cement manufacturer Adani Group, adding that Mahabal Cement is a completely separate entity.

However, there has been increased resentment against the Himanat Biswa Sharma-led BJP government handing away huge swaths of tribal and public land to big corporates. An X user, ChaiAndTweets, wrote, “No transparency, no consent, just blatant favoritism at the cost of Assam’s communities and environment. The High Court reaction says it all: it’s like giving away an entire district! This needs to stop.”
