US SEC Says India Yet To Serve Bribery Case Summons To Adani

Washington DC, United States: The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (US SEC) has informed the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York that the Modi Government has not yet served the Summons and Complaint to Gautam Adani in connection with the alleged bribery, securities fraud, wire fraud and other related conspiracies.

In a filing on July 12, Monday, the US SEC told a New York Eastern District court that they asked India’s Ministry of Law & Justice for help in delivering the summons and complaint to the defendants in India as per the process outlined in an international treaty. However, the SEC says, the Indian authorities are yet to issue the documents.

U.S. prosecutors in November last year indicted the Adani Group’s founder and chair, Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, and others for alleged malpractices. The allegations include that the defendants in India paid bribes totaling Rs 2,029 crore to secure solar power deals with multiple states in India mediated by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).

Reacting to the development, Raju Parulekar, an X user and political analyst, sarcastically stated that the SEC has to understand that Gautam Adani is Narendra Modi’s “close pal (bff).”

“Non-servicing of summons and complaints in five months is enough evidence of LACK OF WILL, of the Modi Government, to honor The Hague Service Convention,” Parulekar wrote on his social media platform.

The US federal agency indicted Adani Group for allegedly not revealing to US investors about its involvement in a complex and high-value bribery scheme, as per the SEC. The SEC has been in correspondence with India’s Ministry of Law and Justice to serve notices to the Adani Group in India since February 2025.

Though the SEC told the court that it had requested assistance from the law ministry in India to help with serving the summons, no major development occurred.

As per reports, the law ministry has sent the summons notice for Gautam Adani and others to an Ahmedabad court. However, this court is yet to serve the papers to Adani. On Monday, the SEC reiterated that it was still trying to serve the group in India, adding that the authorities have not yet effected service. The US Sec has been in touch with India in accordance with The Hague Service Convention.

Notably, lawyers from the Adani Group were aiming to persuade their United States counterparts to “dismiss” the case filed by the US Department of Justice against the business group, as per a report by The News Minutes.
