Adani Bribery Charges: Senior Lawyers Comes Out In Support

Senior Lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani and Former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi defended Gautam Adani.

Senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani and former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi have come forward to defend Gautam Adani‘s against corruption charges. Mahesh Jethmalani stated that the US indictment against Gautam Adani contains unproven claims.

He criticised the Congress party for using this issue as a “political tool” after their loss in the Maharashtra elections.

Jethmalani accused the party of having no other issues to focus on and warned that constantly bringing up Adani and Manipur which involve foreign meddling is not in the country’s best interest.

Jethmalani attacked the Congress party, saying, “This is clearly a political tool. They have just had a rout in the Maharashtra elections. They’ve been successful winners in coalition on the coattails of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, but Maharashtra was a prize that they were very confident of winning. This is a completely divergent tactic.”

He added, “They have no other issues. You will see that constantly the Congress Party in particular and the INDI alliance sometimes harp on only two issues in which there is foreign meddling. One is Adani and the other is Manipur. These are both issues which they should stay away from. I regret to say that it is not in the country’s interest to keep promoting these and playing with fire.”

Adani Renewables has clarified that Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain face no bribery charges, contradicting media reports.

The company released a filing stating that the three individuals are clear of all bribery charges as per the US Department of Justice, but face three other charges.

Former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi defended Adani that he analysed the five counts in the US indictment and noted that Adani and his nephew are not charged in the most significant ones.

According to Rohatgi, “Count 1 and count 5 are more important than the others, but in neither are Adani and his nephew charged. Count 1 is against certain other persons minus the two Adanis.”

The company has denied media reports claiming Adani executives were charged with bribery and corruption. In an exchange filing, Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) said that news published by various media houses on the bribery and corruption charges against Adani officials is “incorrect.”

The US Department of Justice has indicted Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain on charges of conspiring to commit securities and wire fraud.

The indictment alleges that the defendants agreed to pay over $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain lucrative solar energy supply contracts. However, Adani Renewables maintains that the allegations are incorrect and that the company has not paid any bribes.
