The regional fire department of Castile and Leon, soon after the incident, had posted on its website that a car crash had occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday and burst into flames with two men, aged 28 and 26. Jota was travelling along with his brother Andre, who was also a footballer.
As per a BBC report, the car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking. The car suddenly caught on fire, which led to the death of both youngsters.
Portugal’s Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, confirming the death, wrote in a post on X on Thursday, “The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honoured Portugal’s name, and his brother is unexpected and tragic. I extend my deepest condolences to their family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sports.”
