Aadhaar, the 12-digit individual identification number, is the vital proof of identity and proof of address for Indian citizens. It establishes the uniqueness of every citizen on the basis of demographic and biometric information. Aadhaar, assigned by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is also important for accessing government subsidies and welfare schemes.

The Blue Aadhaar card, or Baal Aadhaar card, is specifically designed for children. UIDAI introduced this concept in 2018. Baal Aadhaar, printed in blue coloured letter, is for children aged 5 and below. With this, parents can apply for an Aadhaar card for their newborns.

According to the central government”s reply to a question in Lok Sabha to Baal Aadhaar, “the letter informs the Aadhaar holder (Parents) to update the Aadhaar details with biometrics on attaining age of five years failing which Aadhaar will be deactivated and will not be valid.” The main highlight of the Baal Aadhaar is that a child”s biometric data is not required. Instead, their UID is processed with the help of demographic data and a facial photograph linked to the UID of their parents. The Aadhaar of the child is linked with either of the parent’s Aadhaar.

UIDAI says that a blue coloured letter has been introduced to visibly distinguish the letter for children and for ease of mass communication with people to get the biometrics of their children updated on attaining the age of five years.
