A cheating case has been registered against unidentified individuals with a plot twist of allegedly duping a bullion firm owner in Ahmedabad of Rs 1.60 crore using counterfeit currency notes featuring the picture of actor Anupam Kher.

On Sunday, officials said that the case has been registered on the basis of complaint lodged by Mehul Thakkar, a bullion trader in Manek Chowk area of Ahmedabad, who was allegedly deceived by unidentified con men.

Thakkar was allegedly told that some people wanted to buy 2,100 grams of gold. The accused wanted wanted the gold delivered at a courier firm on CG Road in Navrangpura area on September 24. Thakkar sent his employees with the gold at the office where the two accused were present. Thakkar’s employees delivered the gold and the accused gave them a plastic cover which they said had Rs 1.3 crore in cash.

The accused also told the employees to count them in a counting machine. In a meantime, the two accused escaped from the shop with gold claiming that they are going to collect the remaining amount of Rs 30 lakh from an adjoining shop. And the employees of Thakkar found fake notes in the plastic cover, when they opened it.

This case was registered at the Navrangpur police station. As per the reports, inspector A A Desai said that the accused set a plot to dupe the bullion firm. Even the courier firm where the delivery of gold happened was a fake one without any registered rent agreement. They had taken the shop on rent and put a fake board of the courier firm there while promising the land lord to sign the rent agreement in a day or two. The currency notes they delivered were fake with pictures of Anupam Kher on it.

As per the reports, in the last four years, India has faced increasing issues with counterfeit currency despite efforts to combat it, particularly following the 2016 demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, which was partly aimed at curbing the circulation of fake notes.
