Mumbai, Maharashtra: Following the Thane train accident on Monday, the Indian Railways, in a recently-issued statement, announced that all new rakes being manufactured for Mumbai’s suburban network will have automatic door-closing mechanisms. Similarly, rakes in service will be redesigned to incorporate automatic door-closing mechanisms to prevent passengers from falling from moving trains.
At least 5 passengers died and several were left injured after falling off a train near Mumbra railway station in Thane on today morning. Due to overcrowding, the passengers were hanging from the train gates and footboard, and they collided with another train that was passing in the opposite direction towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSTM).
