On Thursday, National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Rekha Sharma referring the recently released National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) survey, held that increase in the number of First Information Reports (FIRs) in crime against women is “a positive development.” She urged the women to come out and file complaints about their issues.
While speaking on the NCRB survey data, Rekha Sharma said: “NCRB data is showing that more women are coming forward and reporting crimes against them. NCRB data is saying that more FIRs are being registered . . . ”
“Data doesn’t show crime is rising. This data means women are coming forward and complaining. It does not say how many FIRs have been registered, and how many charge sheets have been filed. It is only on the basis of FIRs. We always tell the Police, always register the FIR when a woman complains,” she added.
Continuing further, Rekha Sharma says that she see it as “positive change.” “As long as we don’t talk about the issues, the situation will not change.. I would like to tell women, come out and file complaints. If the Police do not listen, complain to NCW,” she said.
While speaking about domestic violence against women, NCW chief pressed on the importance of changing the social mindset. “Society is also responsible when it comes to domestic violence,” She observed that it is the duty of society to make certain that women get equal treatment, and if they are not safe within their families, any law will of help. ” It is important to change the mindset of family and society,” she added.
The NCRB report titled “Crime in India 2022” is based on information gathered from 36 states and Union territories and central agencies.
