After the Maharashtra assembly election result was declared, US billionaire and Tesla CEO Elon Musk today took a swipe at unfinished still counting US election result. In an X post on Sunday, the SpaceX founder wrote, “India counted 640 million votes in 1 day. California is still counting votes.”
The billionaire businessman also shared an article explaining how India counted 640 million votes in one single day, referring to the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year. During the country’s general election, India counted over 642 million votes, and the result was also declared in a single day of counting.

In some parts of the US, including California, the counting has been still going on for the US presidential elections. The vote counting had started on November 5, and the sluggish counting process has invited criticism.
India’s Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the use of its efficiency in the process enable rapid counting of votes, and the country’s postal ballots are also counted before the EVM votes are unsealed. The counting for the 543 parliamentary constituencies is then conducted simultaneously on the result day.

Notably, in California, the process is a bit complicated. One of the most populous states in the US, the state has the biggest number of ballot votes. The state conducts most of its elections by mail, and the processing of these ballots involves multiple steps, like signature verification on ballot envelopes, as it heavily relies on mail-in voting.
According to reports, more than 300,000 ballots were still uncounted weeks later after the process started. In the previous elections too, California has witnessed a delay in the counting time due to the number of mail-in votes in the state. States such as Arizona also take time to finish their counting process.
