Billionaire Elon Musk has donated to a super political action committee working to elect Republican Party candidate Donald Trump to the White House. The amount donated is unknown, however, as per the Bloomberg report, it was “sizeable”.

The political group America PAC is required to reveal its list of donors on July 15. The tech mogul has earlier claimed that he prefers to stay away from politics and had described himself as a political independent.

In March, Trump had a meeting with Musk and other wealthy donors. The money injection has come at the time when Trump has overtaken his political rival, Joe Biden, in fundraising with the help of deep-pocketed Wall Street and corporate donors. The money raised for Biden dropped after his calamitous debate which led to prominent Democratic donors withdrawing their checkbook.

Elon Musk’s hefty donation towards the election campaign presents an opportunity for him to become a financial juggernaut for Republicans.

With the chipping in of Musk, the US presidential election is shaping to be the most expensive one this year. America PAC is the biggest spender on direct voter contacts. It has spent $15.8 million so far, with $13.1 million of that going for field operations, federal record show.

However, the Trump campaign has declined to comment. Chris Gober, America PAC’s treasurer,  also declined to comment.

Though both Trump and Elon Musk had earlier clashed multiple times over free speech issues, the two have grown closer with the tech entrepreneur advising the former president on electric vehicles and crypto policy.
