International Underground Expert Arnold Dix Takes Charge of Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue Operation

International tunneling expert Arnold Dix has taken charge of the Uttarkashi tunnel rescue operation, where 41 men are trapped inside a collapsed tunnel. Dix’s calm presence has appeared to be a ray of hope for the entire rescue team. Despite looking good, only a meticulous scrutiny can tell if there are any dangers that exist inside the tunnel, Dix said, according to ANI.

‘We need to compare what we have seen here above the tunnel with what we know is happening inside the tunnel. We are rescuing those 41 men and we will not let anyone get hurt while doing it. It is like any complex job where we have to look all around, from the top to bottom. The team here is so focused on the rescue and so focused that no one else gets hurt. At the moment, it is looking positive. We are all one team and the whole world is with us,’ he said.

Accompanied by some of the best Himalayan geology experts, Dix may start the operations tomorrow. The mission involves micro-tunneling and other significant, innovative strategies.

As renowned tunneling expert Professor Dix has been adorned with many awards, including the Alan Neyland Australasian Tunnelling Society bi-annual award for excellence in tunnelling, specifically in tunnel fire safety, and the Committee Service Award by the National Fire Protection Association of the United States of America.

The tunnel collapsed, trapping 41 workers on November 12. The rescue team has successfully drilled a vertical shaft to reach the trapped workers. In order to achieve this, they had to lay a road to the top of the hill. An American-made auger machine, which has been used to bore through the rocks stuck on debris. According to the experts, this shows the difficulty of the task.
