Arnold Dix, an Australia-based tunnelling expert that India will thank for the Uttarkashi tunnel rescue mission. He is a globally known name in tunnel safety and disaster response. Arnold Dix focuses on  underground and transportation infrastructure and gives guidelines on risks associated with underground construction.

He drew in and joined the operation on November 20 to rescue 41 workers trapped inside Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi since November 12. Reaching the spot, Arnold Dix oversaw the Silkyara tunnel site and interacted with the agencies involved in the rescue missions. He, who is well adapted to the risks associated with underground tunneling, appears positive on the safe rescue of workers. Arnold Dix assured on Thursday that all the workers will be rescued by Christmas. His guarantee came as a new legion of hope amidst the intervening struggles posing hurdles in the rescue mission.

While handling tunnel collapse, Arnold Dix stresses about the necessity of careful planning and safety to mitigate further troubles. He concentrates on scrupulous analysis and consideration while undertaking such risky operations. “His approach is grounded and factual. He thinks about the problem at hand, provides direct advice on deciding what to do, and then takes responsibility for his advice and actions,” his website claims.

Besides holding significant position as the President of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (Geneva), he partakes roles in various capacities including Geologist, Engineer and Lawyer. He obtained Science and Law Degree from Monash University, Melbourne.

Arnold Dix is a member of the British Institute of Investigators, a member of the specialist Underground Works Chambers, a member of the Victorian Bar and is a visiting professor of engineering (tunnels) at Tokyo City University. In a career over three decades, Arnold Dix has received numerous recognitions including Alan Neyland Australasian Tunnelling Society bi-annual award for excellence in tunneling in 2011, and Committee Service Award by the National Fire Protection Association of the United States of America in 2022.
