New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday, July 31, granted divorce to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah after resolving his divorce dispute with his estranged wife, Payal Abdullah, through mediation.

Appearing for the chief minister, advocate Kapil Sibal said that both the couple embraced freedom, and that it is all settled.  “Lordships may grant divorce. All other matters will be withdrawn,” the lawyer submitted.

Hearing the case, a Bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe disposed of the appeal stating that all disputes between the parties had been amicably resolved.

Omar Abdullah and Payal got married in September 1994, but have been living separately for a long time. In 2016 , Omar’s earlier divorce plea was rejected by a family court, noting that he failed to prove that his marriage had irretrievably broken down. The court had also noted he  could not prove his claims of “cruelty” or “desertion” back then.

The politician had sought the Court’s intervention under Article 142 of the Constitution, which empowers the top court to pass any order necessary for doing complete justice in a matter. In 2024, the court referred the matter to mediation after both sides agreed to explore an amicable settlement, which was then settled by the mediator.
