Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Jawhar Sircar has announced his resignation from the Rajya Sabha and politics as he posted a note on the X platform. He cited that the alleged corruption in the West Bengal government and the mishandling of a recent rape and murder is the sole reason for this decision.

Sircar also expressed his frustration with the government’s response to the case and the widespread protests that followed this serious incident. He felt that the government’s actions were too little and they were too late to react. He had hoped for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s direct intervention in the case but it did not happen, he cited.

He also criticised the alleged corruption in the state saying that it has led to a loss of trust in the government. Sircar mentioned that several local leaders have acquired large properties and expensive vehicles, which has hurt the people’s trust in political representatives.

Sircar had initially hoped that Mamata Banerjee would carry out her public campaign against corruption but became disillusioned with the lack of action. He was advised by well-wishers to remain an MP to continue the battle against the regime however, he ultimately decided to step down from his position.

The resignation comes after the rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The incident sparked widespread protests not just in support of the victim, but also against the state government and TMC.

Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh responded to Sircar’s resignation as he said that while his decision is respected, the party is focused on addressing public concerns about the Kolkata rape and murder case. It was said that Jawhar Sircar will formally submit his resignation to the Rajya Sabha chairperson soon.
