'No Song For Badlapur': TMC Leader On Arijit Singh's Release On Kolkata Rape-Murder

Trinamool Congress Party leader Kunal Ghosh today accused Arijit Singh, the noted Bollywood singer, of selective criticism for releasing a song, for the victim of the Kolkata rape and murder that occurred at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.

A West Bengal native, the musician on Thursday released a Bengali song ‘Aar Kobe’ (If not now, then when?) on his official YouTube channel while penning a long note describing the RG Kar Medical College incident. ”On 9th August 2024, in the heart of Kolkata, a tragedy shook the nation to its core. The brutal massacre of a young trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College ignited a firestorm of protests across India. This song is a cry for justice, a lament for the countless women who suffer in silence, and a demand for change,” the singer noted.

Referring to the award-winning singer’s protest song, TMC leader asked why Arijit Singh did not release a similar song demanding justice for the two kindergarten girls who were sexually abused at a school in Maharashtra’s Badlapur, another shocking incident involving a 3- and 4-year-old girl and a school janitor. The incident had also caused widespread outrage in Thane.

The TMC leader also admitted that the singer’s song demanding justice for the victim, saying it is justified and that he supports it. “Arijit Singh is a wonderful singer. He is also a good human being,” Ghose wrote, adding that the problem with Arijit is that his consciousness arises only for Bengal. “He never releases songs for other incidents like the one that happened in Maharashtra’s Badlapur or for (wrestler) Sakshi Malik, because he primarily works there (Mumbai). His work, money, and career are associated with the Hindi film industry,” a tough translation of the TMC leader’s post reads.
