"Power Of Protest Is Real...": Shiv Sena MP After Lokpal Withdrew Tender To Buy 7 BMW Cars

New Delhi: Lokpal, India’s national anti-corruption ombudsperson, an independent statutory body tasked with the duty of investigating corruption allegations against public functionaries, including the Prime Minister, ministers, MPs, and government officials, has retracted a contentious proposal to procure seven luxury BMW cars worth over Rs 4 crore for their use.

The contentious tender was scrapped after widespread criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups. Lokpal had invited tenders from noted agencies for the supply of seven BMW 3 Series 330Li cars in October this year, for the vehicles to be allocated individually to the chairperson and six members of the Lokpal, currently headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar (retd).

The development drew sharp criticism, with civil society groups and opposition leaders accusing the anti-corruption body of chasing luxury over legitimacy. Notably, following the criticism, the government’s e-procurement site showed that the status of the tender was canceled citing “administrative reasons/issues” two months after the tender was invited.

It is reported that the decision to cancel the procurement of the luxury vehicles was taken following a full-bench resolution of the Lokpal.

Sharing the report, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi observed, “Power of protest is real” while urging the people to raise their voices for issues that matter.

“Remember Lokpal members who wanted to buy 7 BMW cars for their use? It has led to much outrage. Glad that outrage managed to get them to withdraw the tender. The power of protest is real, raise your voices for issues that matter,” the MP wrote on X.
