Massive Security Ahead Of Nabanna March Demanding Mamata Banerjee's Designation

As the probe on the Kolkata rape and murder by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is going on, the row over the alleged attempt to cover up the crime has been mounting. The Aschimbanga Chattro Samaj, a student organisation, has called for a march to ‘Nabanna’ on August 27 demanding the arrest of the culprits in the Kolkata rape-murder victim and the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor that happened at the seminar hall of the city’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 sent shockwaves across the country, sparking outrage among the public. Notably, the CBI’s allegations that there has been an attempt to cover up the case by the local police have sparked a fresh row against the state government.

The Aschimbanga Chattro Samaj, an unregistered student body, stated that the protesters would gather around 2 p.m. for the march to Nabanna. Notably, while the left student’s wings and youth distanced themselves from the march, the BJP has supported the organization’s call. West Bengal police have also declared the scheduled marches “illegal” and “unauthorised,” asserting that they have taken necessary precautions to allay apprehensions about potential law and order situations.

Though the student body has stated that the rallies demanding the resignation of the chief minister will be peaceful, the additional commissioner of police in Kolkata, Supratim Sarkar, did not give permission to hold the march, saying that they did not seek formal permission with sufficient details. The ACP said they have concrete information that a section of miscreants, taking advantage of the emotions of people and well-intentioned citizens, “will try to create large-scale violence and chaos to the extent that the police are compelled to use force.”

However, ahead of the potential rally today, more than 6,000 Kolkata Police personnel have been deployed in the city. The area around Nabanna has been reportedly turned into a fortress with three-layered security by Kolkata Police and Howrah City Police. Barricades have been installed at 19 points, according to a report by India Today.

The accused, Sanjoy Roy, though earlier confessed the crime, later denied his involvement and said he was framed and is innocent. “I haven’t committed any crime. I’m being framed. Maybe this test will prove that,” Roy said while consenting to the polygraph test.

The parents have alleged that the colleague of the trainee doctor has also been involved in the crime.
