Bill Demanding Capital Punishment For Rapists In Next Session: Mamata Banerjee

As protests escalate in West Bengal against the government regarding the rape and murder case at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced today that her government will introduce a bill demanding capital punishment for rapists in the next assembly session.

“Next week, we will convene an Assembly session and pass a Bill within 10 days to ensure capital punishment for rapists. We will send this Bill to the Governor. If he doesn’t approve it, we will sit outside Raj Bhavan. This Bill must be passed, and he cannot evade accountability this time,” she said while addressing a rally in Kolkata.

Commenting on the bandh announced by the BJP today in protest of the police action against the RSS-backed march yesterday, she accused the BJP of defaming Bengal and conspiring to derail the probe into the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case. She also alleged that sixteen days have passed since the CBI took over the probe, yet justice remains elusive.

Speaking at the TMC’s students’ wing rally in Kolkata, the chief minister further targeted the BJP for calling a bandh since saying that they wanted political dividends over a dead body. “The BJP is trying to exploit the emotions of ordinary people in the wake of the death of a young woman. They want to malign Bengal and plotted a conspiracy to derail the probe into her death so that the victim and her family do not get justice,” Banerjee said.

She further questioned the central probe agency, saying, “Where is the justice? Sixteen days have passed since the CBI took over the case.” The chief minister appealed to the agitating junior doctors to end their strike and return to work.
