
Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai Takes Oath As 52nd Chief Justice Of India (Photo on X@VPIndia)
New Delhi: Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai took charge as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on Wednesday, May 14, succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna. The oath taking ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, and President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to the in the country’s top judicial post. Justice Gavai will hold the position for six months before he retires in November.
President Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and other members of the Union Cabinet congratulated the new chief justice.

Elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court in 2019, Justice Gavai has been part of several landmark judgments, including the verdict upholding the Centre’s 2016 demonetisation decision and the ruling that declared the electoral bonds scheme unconstitutional.
Hailing from Amravati in Maharashtra, the swearing in sparked immense celebration in his hometown, with locals n Amravati marked the occasion with fireworks, sweets and heartfelt jubilation, reported Free Press Journal.

The new chief justice has several peculiarities including being the first Buddhist to become the Chief Justice of India and only the second CJI from the Scheduled Caste community. Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Justice Gavai’s father, Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai, a prominent leader in the Ambedkarite movement and a respected politician.
Kicked off his legal career in 1985 at the age of just 25 in Mumbai, Justice Gavai Mumbai moved to Nagpur, where he rose through the legal ranks, first as an additional government advocate and later as the principal government advocate at the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court.
