"Will Look Into This": Chief Justice Reacts To Supreme Court' 'Stray Dogs' Order

New Delhi: Supreme Court chief justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai on Wednesday said that he will look into a recent order passed by the apex court’s bench consisting of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan directing civic authorities to capture all strays dogs in Delhi-NCR. The order pronounced on August 11 also asked the authorities to also sterilise and vaccinate the captured dogs and relocate them to shelters.

The top court’s order sparked fury, with several animal rights groups raising objections to the ruling, noting that the verdict lacks compassion. The chief justice’s assurance that he will look into the controversy and concerns regarding the street dogs in Delhi, is believed to assuage the animal right activists.

The matter was mentioned before the chief justice by a lawyer, objecting to the verdict on the removal of all stray dogs from the city. The lawyer told the chief justice that there was an earlier order by the top court ruling that there cannot be indiscriminate killing of canines, stating that compassion for all living beings has to be protected,

Responding to the lawyer, the chief justice said, “But the other judge bench of judge has already passed the order. I will look into this.”
