The Karnataka Government, in a move to ease traffic congestion, has proposed for a 190 km tunnel in Bengaluru. Addressing a press conference at the Vidhana Soudha, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that a 190 kms tunnel has been proposed and that the government would be inviting tenders for the same within 45 days. He added that the eight companies which have qualified will be preparing a feasibility report, which the government would look into, reported news18. On this he said that companies would undertake the study and suggest upon whether the roads should be four or six lanes, where it should be expanded more out of the city and also on where the roads were to begin and end.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who holds the Bengaluru City Development portfolio, commented on the vastness of the project saying that it would need huge funding and several stages for completion. He mentioned the proposed areas, which includes Bellary Road, Old Madras Road, Esteem Mall Junction to Mekhri Circle, Miller Road, Chalukya Circle, Trinity Circle, Sarjapur Road, Hosur Road, Kanakapura Road to Krishna Rao Park, Mysore Road to Sirsi Circle, Magadi Road, Tumakuru Road to Yeshwantpur Junction, Outer Ring Road, Goraguntepalya, KR Puram and Silk Board areas.
He said, that the city may need a four lane tunnel road and that these areas have been chosen on a priority basis. He touched upon the issue of traffic congestion and potholes in the city. He would be paying a visit to the Outer Ring road on October 7. He called upon the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike engineers to work with the traffic police in addressing the problem of potholes.
Adding that the public could also pool in by informing the BBMP Commissioner about the potholes, he said, “when it rains, it is normal to get potholes. Such roadblocks will be repaired immediately in important areas of the city.”
On taking the Centre’s help in Bengaluru traffic roadblocks, he said “Of course we will seek help from the Centre. Once these proposals are submitted, we will submit the proposal to the Centre.”
