Karnataka Woman Death: Boyfriend Alleges Honour Killing

Bengaluru, Karnataka: Mystery surrounds over the death of a 21-year-old woman from a village in Karnataka. The victim was identified as R. Sahana and her body was recovered from a southeast Bengaluru lake, where her father claims it as accident, but her boyfriend alleges it as honour killing since the couple belonged to different communities.

Sahana, a resident of Harohalli near Hosur, and her father, Ramamurthy, fell into Huskur Lake at Hebbagodi, after their two-wheeler allegedly went out of control, police reports. Sahana who was riding on the pavillion reportedly drowned between 12.30 pm and 1 pm.

Ramamurthy who swam to safety, later went to the police station, and filed a complaint. He told the Police that he was riding his bike with Sahana, when motorcycle “accidentally” fell into the lake. “I managed to swim to safety, but she could not,” Times of India reports as Ramamurthy is saying.

Meanwhile, Sahana’s boyfriend Nithin claimed that Ramamurthy must have intentionally pushed her into the lake since since her parents opposed their relationship.

“I belong to the Naidu caste and Sahana is a Kuruba community member. After learning about our relationship, her father had arranged her marriage to their relative. But she insisted on marrying me,” Indian Express quotes as Nithin is saying.

Nithin claimed that Ramamurthy had called him to his friend’s house in Hebbagodi on Sunday night and hit Sahana in his presence. But Sahana stood firm in her decision to marry Nithin, wherein Ramamurthy declared that he would never allow it, Nithin added.

The police on Wednesday arrested the woman’s father based on Nithin’s complaint. During interrogation, Ramamurthy said that he dozed off while driving with her and lost control of the bike adding that he was sleepless after learning about his daughter’s relationship.

But Nithin alleges that Ramamurthy waited till his daughter was drowned and later went to the police station. She said that no father would not leave behind his daughter if he knew how to swim.
