Edited by Kabani R

Mahua Moitra on Wednesday lashed out at Union Minister Giriraj Singh over her derogatory remarks on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by snubbing him as a “shameful misogynist.”

During the inaugural event at the 29th edition of Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) on Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister shook a leg with Bollywood actors Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and director Mahesh Bhatt. It was in response to this viral video, Union Minister Giriraj Singh remarked: “Jashn mana rahi hai, thumke laga rahi hai, yeh uchit nahi hai. (She is celebrating and dancing, this is inappropriate).” When it was pointed that Mamata Banerjee was dancing as part of the film festival, he added, “Toh festival mai thumke lagana kaun zaroori hai? (Is it required to dance at the festival?).”

On social media platform X, TMC MP slammed this remark made by the Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department and said: “. . . we do not have to put up with the likes of you, with the misogyny and patriarchy practiced by you and the BJP every single day . . . let us tell you what is ‘uchit’ and ‘anuchit’. It is not ‘uchit’ that you deprive lakhs and crores of people in Bengal of their rightful MNREGA dues that you and your ministry have withheld, it is not ‘uchit’ that you withhold crores of AWAS Yojana money that rightfully belong to the poor of West Bengal, it is not ‘uchit’ that you deprive hard-earned money and wage earners of their livelihood for years and months shamelessly and you have the nerve to tell us what is ‘uchit’ and what is not. .  . ‘ She even wrote ‘Get a life’ on X while sharing the video attacking Minister.

Mahua Moitra also wrote that Minister’s shameful misogynistic comments about the only lady Chief Minister in India reeks of his “sick perverted mentality.”
