After informing his family that he was going to offer prayer, a man named Mohit Sharma from Gujarat went to Dwarka police station on a bike, parked it near the police station and took away a police SUV car, driving away audaciously from the police station compound in the presence of the police personnel. The audacious act, driving away the police vehicle at the tip of the nose of police, was carried out by a man facing a defamation case in Kutch’s Gandhidham town.
During his journey in the police vehicle, he took selfies with the SUV and uploaded them on his social media accounts. He even clicked selfies with a wide-eyed smile while the police vehicle was in the background.
Interestingly, Sharma had, during the interrogation, threatened the police officer who was questioning him in the defamation case that he would steal a police vehicle there.
Sharma stole the car at around 8:15 am on Thursday and was captured near Ambar Chokdi in Jamnagar around 2:30 pm, driving approximately 200 kilometres and making the police chase him for around 6 hours. He also was not required to refuel the car as the diesel tank was full. The car was seen on CCTV crossing the toll gates of Kuranga and Khambhaliya.
Speaking about how the car was stolen, Samir Sarda, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), said “There is a continuous flow of tourists in Dwarka, and many times the staff members take cars in emergencies. So, the police station officer (PSO) may not have noticed anything unusual in the car being taken without informing him. He saw the car was being driven out but he did not see the driver’s face.”
Speaking about the intention of Sharma, DSP said that the police suspect that he intended “to steal the car and sell it in scrap.”
“Sharma was being investigated in a case of defamation by Gandhidham police. He had threatened the investigation officer that he would steal a police vehicle there. We suspect he intended to steal the car and sell it in scrap,” the DSP said. According to some police sources, Sharma is a marijuana addict
