Several shocking videos captured by the residents and visitors showed powerful waves washing people away from the street in California’s Ventura on Thursday. The videos showed the onlookers rushing to escape the sudden flood-like situation, and the wave caused several people to get injured and be hospitalized. Following the powerful offshore storm, there were strong waves along the shores and the cities in California.
The residents were informed about the potential storm, capable of creating quick and dangerous waves. However, the Pacific storm-induced wave, reaching 28 to 33 feet took people away from the shore. Further waves are also forecasted, which can be up to 40 feet, according to the authorities.
The officials have issued a warning in the region about the potential recurrence of the rogue waves. The wave caused some damage to piers, jetties and other structures around the shore. According to a report by CNN, the wave swept around 20 people and caused 8 of them to be hospitalized due to injuries.
The National Weather Service forecast the potential destructive waves over the weekend on the west coast. It has also issued an alert of the possible higher waves across the US-Mexico border and southern Oregon.
Exhorting the resident to be more cautious, the National Weather Service said: “Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore.”
Some of the roads have already closed due to the recurrent strong waves along the coastlines. Given Friday’s strong wave, the officials closed a main access point to Ventura Pier.
However, for many, especially surfers, the massive waves seem to be an opportunity to tackle the wave and many surfers have reached the areas to try their skills there, despite safety warnings from the authorities.
