Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently made a visit to Elon Musk-led Tesla”s manufacturing facility, situated in Fremont, California. Piyush Goyal also shared the images of his visit on social networking platform X and made the important announcement that Tesla is planning to double its imports of auto components from India.

“Visited @Tesla’s state of the art manufacturing facility at Fremont, California. Extremely delighted to see talented Indian engineers & finance professionals working at Senior positions and contributing to Tesla’s remarkable journey to transform mobility,” wrote Piyush Goyal on X on November 14. The Union Minister also highlighted the rising significance of Indian auto component suppliers in Tesla’s EV supply chain. “Also proud to see the growing importance of Auto component suppliers from India in the Tesla EV supply chain. It is on its way to double its components imports from India,” added Piyush Goyal.

Piyush Goyal also noted the absence of Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, during the visit and added, “Missed Mr@ElonMusk’s magnetic presence and I wish him a speedy recovery.” At the same time, Elon Musk thanked Union Minister Piyush Goyal for visiting the Tesla facility in California. Elon Musk also apologised for not being able to meet the minister. “It was an honor to have you visit Tesla! My apologies for not being able to travel to California today, but I look forward to meeting at a future date,” wrote Elon Musk on X, responding to Piyush Goyal’s post.
In September, Piyush Goyal said that Tesla is planning to source components worth $1.7–$1.9 billion from India and has already sourced parts worth $1 billion. In June, Elon Musk met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US. Following this meeting, the Tesla CEO said that the electric carmaker will be in India “as soon as humanly possible”. Tesla”s discussions with the Centre is underway as it is looking to enter the domestic market.
