
MP Raises Unemployment Concerns: Labour Minstry Responds With Data (image:www.cppr.in)
New Delhi: The estimated Unemployment Rate (UR) on usual status for youth aged 15-29 has decreased from 17.8% in 2017-18 to 10.2% in 2023-24, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje informed in the Parliament.
In response to Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman’s concerns regarding increasing unemployment and a sluggish hiring process, the Minister dispelled these apprehensions by citing data on employment and unemployment from the Periodic Labour Force Survey report.

Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) collects data on employment and unemployment.
“As per the latest available Annual PLFS reports, the estimated Unemployment Rate (UR) on usual status for youth of age 15-29 has decreased from 17.8% in 2017-18 to 10.2% in 2023-24,” the Minister informed the parliament.
Based on the latest reports, the Minister pointed out that the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) shows an increase in employment. The WPR indicates the proportion of people aged 15 and over are employed in either public or private sectors. It has increased from 50.9% in 2019-20 to 58.2% in 2023-24, the Minister conveyed.
In rural areas, the employment rates surged significantly from 53.3% in 2019–20 to 62.1% in 2023–24. Urban areas also witnessed a spike, with the WPR moving from 45.8% to 49.4% during the same period.
