Muslim Minority Scapegoat Of Total Failure In Development Policy: Thomas Isaac Attacks Assam’s Himanta Sarma

Former Kerala finance minister and economist Thomas Isaac said Assam chief minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma is making the Muslim minority in Assam the scapegoat of the latter’s total failure in the development policy. Isaac was commenting on the recent developments in the northeastern state in which the state introduced legislation to make Muslims register their wedding with the authorities and deviation to abolish the Juma break on Fridays in the state assembly

“Assam CM Hemant is making Muslim minority scapegoat for his total failure in development policy. Assam ranks one of the lowest in HDI. Its per capita income, below the national average, is further slipping downwards. Instead of addressing them, he revels in being a worst hate-speech maker,” Dr Isaac wrote.

The Assam chief minister, often in the news with controversial remarks, especially directed at the Muslim community, on Friday removed the break for Muslim legislators during Juma in the assembly on the heels of bringing a marriage and divorce registration act, claiming to prevent child marriage among Muslims, while there is already a central law existing, curbing the marriages involving minors.

The chief minister’s recent remark that he will not let Miya Muslims take over Assam, creating a perception of the community against the public, had caused outrage and protest from the opposition, terming it a sectarian and partisan attitude from a state head. Notably, the BJP leader chose to defend his claims, asserting he will continue to take sides and asking “What can you do about it”

However, several opposition leaders have accused the chief minister of criminal conspiracy to create unrest in the state. The leaders also filed a police complaint alleging Sarma of trying to promote enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion and race. The complaint reportedly accused the chief minister of a conspiracy to create a riot-like situation in Assam unless he is arrested or restrained.
