“I Will Takes Sides, Won’t Let Miya Muslims Take Over Assam”: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said he won’t let ‘Miya Muslims’ take over the state. When opposition parties accused him of being partisan Sarma said, “I will take sides. What can you do about it?”

Himanta Biswa Sarma was speaking in the assembly on adjournment motions brought by the opposition parties to discuss the law and order situation in the state after the rape of a 14-year-old in Nagaon.

While replying to the motion, the Assam chief minister said that the crime rate has not increased if the population growth is taken into account. “Why will people from Lower Assam go to Upper Assam? So that Miya Muslims can take over Assam? We won’t let it happen,” PTI quoted him as saying.

The chief minister earlier had said that in Lower and central Assam and Barak valley districts indigenous people have become a numeric minority and were living in constant fear.

Himanta Biswa Sarma further alleged that after the Lok Sabha elections “a section of members of a particular community had become very active and had been encouraged to commit such crimes” and had warned to come down heavily on the perpetrators.

The chief minister stated that in the last two months, 22 such crimes against women have taken place and this is the 23rd such incident in the state.

The proceedings had to be adjourned for 10 minutes when members of both treasury and opposition benches stormed into the Well of the House.

A 14-year-old was gang-raped by three people in Assam’s Nagaon district while she was returning home from tuition on her bicycle. The incident triggered massive protests following which the chief minister has assured stern action.

Three people who came on a motorcycle surrounded the girl who was allegedly raped by them and left in an injured and unconscious state on the roadside near a pond.

The girl was later rescued by the locals and informed the police. The main accused of the case died while purportedly trying to escape from custody.

The opposition parties had held demonstrations in various parts of Guwahati, alleging the failure of the government to protect women and prevent crime against them.

The women’s group continued to protest at Dhing demanding the arrest of the two culprits, who were absconding.
