The Central Reserve Police Force and Tripura State Rifles deployed soldiers after violence broke out in the Jirania administrative subdivision of West Tripura district on Monday after an idol of goddess Kali was allegedly defaced.

As communal violence between Hindus and Muslim groups erupted in the region, at least 12 houses were burned down, three shops were looted, and a place of worship was damaged, as per The Hindu. Nearly 15 families were provided shelter in a government school after they were displaced.

Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which prohibits the assembly of five or more civilians, has been enforced in West Tripura till Wednesday, reported The Times of India.

The idol was allegedly desecrated at a temple in Koitorabari village in Jirania, sparking violence on the night of August 25. The temple is located around 13 kilometres east of the capital, Agartala.

After the violence, a “peace meeting” was held on Monday between members of different communities. Tripura district superintendent of police and district magistrate Vishal Kumar assured the people that the matter would be investigated and financial aid would be provided for those who had been injured or whose properties were damaged.

Local MLA and minister Sushanta Chowdhury requested people to maintain calm and communal harmony. The Tripura Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance called the incident “worrying.” Party chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya appealed to “those who are responsible” to maintain law and order.

“When our state is reeling under a natural disaster and so much of stress there are some elements who are only playing religious politics. Miscreants regardless of their faith must be dealt with firmly – law has to be neutral to all,” he said in an X post.
