National Law School of India University’s (NLSIU) convocation for the 2026 was cancelled after the students rejected a demand to publicly inviting Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant to the ceremony.
The university had demanding the graduating students to issue a public statement inviting the chief justice of India to the event. On Thursday, NLSIU issued a notice, announcing that no convocation would be held for the 2026 batch due to “unavoidable circumstances”
The students were reportedly invited to the convocation on August 3 for the ceremony scheduled to be held on September 12. Students booked travel and accommodation for both dates. On August 15, the over 700 members of the NLSIU community signed a statement opposing to BCI chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra and CJI Surya Kant attending NLSIU’s convocation.
The graduating batches of NLSIU were told the chief justice of India wanted to meet students to understand their position as a university’s Chancellor. Though students were assured that BCI chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra and chief justice would not be attending the event, the terms later changed, with authorities demanding the students to issue a public statement inviting the chief justice.
